Is Soda Water Bad for Your Teeth?

by ORACURA India on Oct 12, 2024
Is Soda Water Bad for Your Teeth?

The first thought that might occur after you hear the term “sparkling water” is probably that it sounds quite fancy. Well, as different and attractive as it sounds, soda water (also known as sparkling water) comes with a lot of baggage. We do tend to ignore the disadvantages it possesses because we are hung up on the notion that it is still “just water”. Well, to burst this bubble, no it is not just water. Sparkling water is totally different. Therefore, it is now time to explore the contents of sparkling water and their effects on our dental health.

Soda water is water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure, resulting in bubbles and a fizzy sensation. It's often plain but can also be flavored. Sparkling water typically doesn't contain sugars, artificial sweeteners, or other additives, making it a suitable choice for those looking to cut down on sugar intake. The concern with soda water and dental health revolves around its acidity. When carbon dioxide is dissolved in water, it forms carbonic acid.

This process lowers the pH of the water, making it slightly acidic. Acidity is a significant factor in dental erosion, which is the wearing away of the enamel, the hard outer surface of the teeth. Weakened enamel can expose the underlying dentin, leading to extra sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks. Although soda water doesn't contain sugar, weakened enamel is more susceptible to decay if exposed to other harmful substances. Thinning enamel reveals the yellowish dentin beneath, affecting the appearance of your teeth.

While the risks of soda water sound not as dangerous, it still poses significant risks for your oral health. If you are someone who enjoys sparkling water, please make sure to follow some simple precautionary steps such as rinsing with plain water after consumption, using a straw while drinking it, regular dental check ups and last but not the least, maintaining good oral hygiene. Brush twice daily with an automatic toothbrush and floss with ease using an electric flosser. Lucky for you, ORACURA® has the collection of a lifetime for dental health enthusiasts to explore. Happy Oral Health to you!
