What are periodontal pockets ?

What are periodontal pockets ?

Attention Readers

Get your hands out of your pockets, and put on your reading glasses, because we are about to get on a journey to discover and learn about periodontal pockets. Periodontal pockets are spaces or gaps that form between the teeth and the gums due to gum disease (periodontitis).

They develop when the gums pull away from the teeth, creating pockets where bacteria can accumulate and cause further damage to the gums and underlying bone. Teeth are normally held firmly into their sockets with the help of the  gum tissue and bone. Periodontal pockets can deepen with time if left untreated and result in accumulation of bacteria, eventually leading to infection.

However, not all pockets are dangerous. The depth of the pockets determine how harmful they are. The distinction is listed below:

  • 1 to 3 mm - Normal Range
  • 4 to 5 mm - Early or Mild Periodontitis, gum disease is present
  • 5 to 7 mm - Moderate Periodontitis
  • 7 to 12 mm - Advanced Periodontitis

Leading causes of periodontal pockets can be poor oral hygiene, smoking, hormonal changes, certain medical conditions, genetic history, etc. Symptoms of periodontal pockets can be extremely painful. Having bleeding gums, gum recession, bad breath, loose teeth and pus formation.

Periodontal pockets are a common consequence of gum disease, but with proper oral hygiene and timely intervention, their progression can be halted, and oral health can be restored. The sonic electric toothbrush by ORACURA is just the right fit for you. They utilize advanced technology to deliver high-frequency vibrations that effectively remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth along the gumline. Regular dental check-ups and clean up from your dentists are also very essential as they help you detect your diseases sooner.
