Pros And Cons Of Teeth Whitening

by ORACURA India on Feb 23, 2023
Pros And Cons Of Teeth Whitening

Discoloration of teeth is one of the leading issues faced by individuals. In most instances, it is also a socially embarrassing event to have yellow-colored or discolored teeth affecting the bright smile. Although the looks are secondary, health is a priority. There are many reasons behind the discoloration of teeth. Sometimes it’s the age that causes discoloration and other times it could be due to lifestyle factors including the foods or beverages that one consumes.

It is best to take your dentist’s advice when you’re not sure of the reason and thereby take appropriate actions at the earliest.

One of the most common reasons behind tooth staining at an early stage is the lack of dental hygiene. Adopting a proper oral care routine which includes power brushing twice a day and water flossing at least once a day will be remarkable in improving overall dental health and reducing the discoloration of teeth.

Two common teeth-whitening treatments

Vital Whitening : The most common type of whitening, it is done during an in-office procedure where your dentist will use a strong whitening gel along with a specialized light allowing bleaching to happen faster. This contains a form of hydrogen peroxide.

Non-Vital Whitening : Non-vital whitening is done on teeth where root canal treatment has been done and is usually done for intrinsic staining on teeth.

Whilst these treatments are available, it is important to note that not all types of teeth receive them well. For example, discoloration on crowns, caps, veneers, or fillings typically does not react well to the whitening process. Besides this, discoloration caused by any injury or medication does not respond to whitening treatments either.

Some discoloration in teeth is a sign of a more severe problem and should be checked immediately by your dental health provider.

Yellow tooth discoloration that happens as we age can be well treated with the whitening process in most cases.

Pros of Teeth Whitening

The most obvious advantage of teeth whitening treatment is its cosmetic benefit as it enhances the appearance of the smile which leads to more confidence in social events and otherwise. Besides this, the procedure of teeth whitening is also quite convenient and usually affordable depending on the kind of treatment you’re seeking.

Cons of Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening in most cases causes gum irritation and sensitivity. Additionally, a higher concentration of products used in the treatment may add to the sensitivity and prolong it further. Besides this, the lack of effectiveness in certain conditions as discussed above makes this an exception to only a few circumstances.

It is ideal to seek the best suggestion from your dentist about the treatment you should opt for to ward off the potential risks. Following a good oral care routine and all the recommendations by your dentist will help tremendously lower any risks or side effects that the treatment may cause.
